Description

An unmissable route for anyone wishing to explore the religious architecture throughout the Montalto area. The journey starts from Piazza Sisto V with a visit to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, then moves into the medieval village of Montalto to admire the churches of San Nicolò and San Pietro. The route continues along the SP23 to the village of Patrignone, or via easy walking or cycling trails (1.2 km) to explore the Church of Santa Maria in Viminatu, and then the Church of Madonna delle Grazie, also known as Madonna Tonna, located just outside the historic village. From there, the journey resumes along SP23 and SP99 to reach the village of Porchia, or by following marked trails through fields and vineyards. Porchia is home to the Church of Santa Lucia and the picturesque Church of Madonna della Pace, which serves as the final stop of the itinerary. The Church of Madonna della Pace is at the end of a short but challenging downhill trail if approached by bicycle, particularly on the return to Porchia’s historic center. It is therefore recommended to leave bicycles at the start of the trail to avoid carrying them after visiting the church.

The itinerary is easy if the distances between villages are covered by motor vehicle, or moderate in difficulty if undertaken on foot or by bicycle.
