Description

The route unfolds mainly within the historic center of Montalto, allowing visitors to appreciate the major architectural works that marked the urban renewal commissioned by Pope Sixtus V, while also highlighting the sites that contributed to the spiritual growth of this Marchigian pontiff. Starting from the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the trail passes through Porta Patrizia to explore the sites of the papal mint, reaching Piazza Umberto I, home to the Civic Tower, which bears witness to the generosity of the Pope towards his “beloved homeland,” as well as the house where he lived shortly after becoming a cardinal. The itinerary continues to Palazzo Massimauri, before returning to Piazza Sisto V. The route concludes in the Aso Valley with a visit to the historic Sisto V Mill. The urban section of the trail covers approximately 1 km, suitable for walking or cycling, while an additional 5 km leads to the mill. This stretch can be traversed by car or motorbike via SP47, or on foot or by bike following the marked path that begins behind the Municipal Cemetery.
