Inaugurated in March 2002, the museum is located inSistus V Square in the building of the former episcopal seminary and houses works of art from Montalto and the hamlets of Porchia and Patrignone.
In addition to the very rich vestments that belonged to the first bishops of the city, in the evocative setting of the museum you can admire paintings, wooden sculptures, silver furnishings and a remarkable collection of processional crosses dating from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century, all recently restored by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence.
Among all the gifts bestowed by Sistus V to his homeland, notable is the majestic vestments of Sistus V, including a large cope with chasuble, stole, maniple (part of the priest’s vestment) and the bag used for the sacrament, as well as two cassocks and an altar frontal with the papal coat of arms.
However, the Reliquary stands out above all:an absolute masterpiece of French goldsmith art of the fourteenth century.
