Civic Tower
Address Piazza Umberto I, 1, 63068 Montalto delle Marche AP
Description

Overlooking Piazza Umberto I, the Civic Tower was originally built to serve as the seat of the Priors as early as the 1400s. The palace was later expanded between the late 18th and early 19th centuries by the architect Pietro Maggi and continued to function as the town hall until Italian unification, when it became the seat of the local court (Pretura) until 1993. Since then, its rooms have housed a library with a reading room, the Municipal Historical Archive, and the ancient statutes of Montalto, Porchia, Patrignone, as well as the Notarial Statutes. The archives of Montalto Marche represent a valuable historical collection that reflects the city’s importance as a center of administration and justice. Their recovery and restoration have made it possible to preserve and pass on the community’s history to future generations.

Today, thanks to the Metroborgo project, the Civic Tower houses the CAMM – Centro Archivi Montalto Marche, which, through collaboration with private partners, manages the entire archival workflow: from reorganization to cataloging, from restoration to digitization. In addition to providing public consultation services, the space also hosts educational and outreach activities aimed at general audiences, helping to share and keep alive the wealth of information and stories contained in the various archival collections.
