House of Sixtus V and Giuseppe Sacconi
Address Corso Vittorio Emanuele, 11, 63068 Montalto delle Marche AP
Description

The building is located in the central Piazza Umberto I, in front of the Palazzo del Governatore, in the heart of Montalto’s historic center. As a plaque on the façade reads:

"Here lived in the 16th century as Bishop and Cardinal Sixtus V, who raised the dome of St. Peter, a symbol of Religion, and, still a young child in the 19th century, Giuseppe Sacconi, who erected the Vittoriano at the Capitoline Hill in Rome, a symbol of the Fatherland."

In 1567, Domenico di Matteo granted the house to Felice Peretti, the future Pope Sixtus V. At that time, the future pontiff had already been appointed Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti and resided here whenever he was in Montalto. Further records date from the 19th century, when the house had passed to the Sacconi family. In 1856, they sold it to another wealthy Montalto family, the Pasqualinis, but shortly afterward, the renowned architect Giuseppe Sacconi came to live there.
