Monument to Sixtus V
Address SP 23, 15, 63068 Montalto delle Marche AP
Description

At the southeastern entrance to the town stands the bronze sculptural work by Pericle Fazzini, dedicated to Montalto’s most illustrious citizen: Felice Peretti/Pope Sixtus V. Pericle Fazzini was born on May 4, 1913, in nearby Grottammare, where, as a child, he observed his father working as a woodcarver, revealing his early talent. His name is famously associated with the “Resurrection” sculpture that dominates the Vatican’s Sala Nervi. The Montalto work, inaugurated on November 23, 1986, was the last piece created by the artist, just a few months before his death in 1987. The Monument to Sixtus V stands out not only for its artistic significance but also for its modernity and avant-garde character: it is a rotating structure that projects the profile of Sixtus V in 360°, offering ever-changing views throughout the day.
