Description

In the heart of the village of Porchia, in the Piazza del Mercato, stands the distinctive Torrione. Polygonal in shape, it is reinforced at the base with a massive scarp designed to absorb and deflect cannon fire. The tower is crowned with Ghibelline-style battlements atop a row of machicolations, allowing defenders to operate and counterattack safely. Dating back to the 14th century, the tower was updated in the 15th century. Serving as a command post, it oversaw the village’s defenses from above. The side facing the interior of the village is left unwalled. Highly scenic in its location, the tower was once surrounded by other buildings—now demolished—that formed the upper village’s defensive system.

Well-preserved thanks to recent restorations, the tower houses the town clock and can be visited via steep wooden staircases leading up to the upper platform.
