MARINA MASSIRONI
MA CHE RAZZA DI OTELLO?
RAPSODIA PER ARPA E ATTRICE
ALLA RISCOPERTA DELL’OTELLO VERDIANO
by Lia Celi
directed by Massimo Navone
harp solo Monica Micheli

If Shakespeare tells us Othello, it’s a tragedy; if Verdi tells it, it becomes a melodrama.
But when the dark tale of the Moor is entrusted to a lively author—and passionate opera lover—like Lia Celi, the result is an unexpected reinterpretation of the story of Verdi’s masterpiece, of the conventions of melodrama, and of the themes dear to Shakespearean tragedy: jealousy, racism, manipulation, and slander. This act of rewriting offers a fresh female perspective on the heroines of melodrama and opens up amusing yet bitter short circuits with contemporary issues. Marina Massironi brings to the audience the genesis of Verdi’s masterpiece through curious historical anecdotes, topical insights, and reflections on human dynamics, of which the Otello–Iago–Desdemona triangle becomes an emblem—delivered with subtle, disarming humor and moments of intensely passionate tragedy.
All of this is accompanied by the crystalline timbre of the harp played by Monica Micheli.
