Written in 1993 by Giorgio Gaber and Sandro Luporini, the monologue The Child God continues and deepens—after Parlami d’amore Mariù and Il Grigio—the highly distinctive theatrical path pursued by Gaber in those years.

An emblematic example of his “theatre of evocation,” The Child God tells an ordinary love story unfolding over several years and gives the authors the opportunity to investigate Man: to understand whether he has managed to become an adult or has remained hopelessly a child—a child who boasts of his charming spontaneity instead of being ashamed of an eternal immaturity.

A man set against a woman, the best possible witness to cast doubt on his substance, his presumed virility. As was their custom, Gaber and Luporini conduct an investigation that is razor-sharp, never self-absolving, both ruthless and tender, seeking to X-ray the differences between these two beings—so similar and yet so different—with the awareness that if those differences were to disappear, life itself would cease to exist. Between the lines, hope emerges: a bridge toward a less imperfect future. In The Child God, it is the birth of a child that helps the protagonist rediscover the meaning of his actions, amid flashes of self-irony and humor.

Thirty years on, The Child God remains a text of extraordinary power and relevance—cynical yet deeply moving. A disturbing kind of theatre, in its provocation to rethink ourselves, but also one of great empathy.

Set in a metaphorical, decaying bar—amid half-empty bottles and trampled flowers, alluding to a party that has ended badly—the performance is punctuated by fragments of Giorgio Gaber’s songs, which guide the audience through the interpretation of a tale of tragicomic, forceful contemporaneity.

The direction by Giorgio Gallione, a vital force behind the renewed stage life of Gaber’s theatre (most recently his highly acclaimed Il Grigio with Elio), highlights the text’s immediacy and emotional resonance, achieving a perfect match with the performance of Fabio Troiano—a talented and versatile actor of theatre, film, and television, equally adept at comic and introspective material—here called upon for a dazzling, high-wire acting tour de force.
