Riccardo is born in Livorno in the late 1950s. At the age of six he meets his father in a psychiatric hospital; in a delirium, the man screams at him: “You don’t exist!” Riccardo grows up poor, drifting between odd jobs and street fights. At fourteen, by chance, he walks into a gym and discovers freestyle wrestling. Riccardo can exist. He can challenge his father’s curse. He finds a second father in his coach. He trains and begins to win—city competitions, regional tournaments, then national, European, and world titles. At twenty-two he places seventh at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. He could have done better, but the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics will be his.
In every film, every rise is followed by a fall. A serious accident strikes, and Riccardo falls into a coma. When he awakens, he has nothing left. His body is no longer fit for wrestling. No more Olympics. Career over. Riccardo no longer exists—but he manages to take hold of the thread of his life again: his attempts at existence defy narrative logic. His legs no longer hold him, but his arms do. His rebirth is arm wrestling.
This story is not a film. If it were, it would be “based on a true story.” The proof exists: footage, photographs, medical reports—and a son who bears witness to his father’s life.
